Village Centre With Supermarket Proposed at Yeerongpilly Green

A plan for a village centre with a supermarket, shops and restaurants, offices, healthcare facilities including veterinary services, has been lodged with the Council for Yeerongpilly Green, the major urban renewal project in southwest Brisbane.

Dubbed the Yeerongpilly Green Village Heart (DA A005635771),  the centre will rise on a vacant lot surrounded by Queens Way, King Arthur Terrace and Fig Tree Street.

The 4,200 square metres supermarket will serve as the anchor tenant and above it are spaces for offices and other shops. Also proposed in the plan are slots for 292 car park spaces in the basement with Queens Way as the main vehicle access.

BVN, the project’s architect, has worked on the village centre’s design for the last three years.

“From inception, the brief has been to design a contemporary mixed-use development that responds to commercial development requirements while contributing to Brisbane’s architectural and public realm design. This is consistent with the outcomes sought by the Yeerongpilly Green Transit Oriented Neighbourhood Plan,” BVN said.

“The proposed development involves a mix of uses that will operate at different times of the day and night. Small-scale active tenancies are proposed on the primary frontages of the development and adjacent to pedestrian spaces within the development. This will facilitate the creation of a highly activated and vibrant centre.”

In 2019,  Acting Premier and Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said that supermarket giant Woolworths could be a major tenant of the emerging retail hub, potentially generating 100 jobs.

“With new parklands, new pedestrian-friendly pathways and new roads complete, Yeerongpilly Green is already putting on a show, and this highly-anticipated retail precinct with the new Woolworths will form the heart of the project and provide the shopping experience an urban renewal project of this scale merits,” Mr Dick said.

Woolworths to Anchor Yeerongpilly Green Retail Precinct

The retail precinct development, anchored by Woolworths, at the Yeerongpilly Green urban renewal project has been launched as restoration and refurbishment works of heritage-listed properties — The Institute and The Stables — commences. The recently opened pedestrian walkway provides tennis fans a perfect link from Yeerongpilly Train Station to the Queensland Tennis Centre in Tennyson.

Acting Premier and Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick announced the official launch of the $250 million development program on 15 January. The 5,000-sqm retail precinct will be anchored by supermarket store chain Woolworths and is expected to generate around 100 jobs once it is completed.

“Woolworths commitment is the catalyst for development of Yeerongpilly Green’s village centre, which will be a major drawcard for prospective purchasers looking to secure a home in the first stage of this vibrant riverfront community,” Mr Dick said.

“With new parklands, new pedestrian-friendly pathways and new roads complete, Yeerongpilly Green is already putting on a show, and this highly-anticipated retail precinct with the new Woolworths will form the heart of the project and provide the shopping experience an urban renewal project of this scale merits,” he said.

Together with the retail precinct launch, Consolidated Properties also announced the commencement of the $10 million restoration program for the two heritage-listed properties.

“Not only are we announcing Woolworths commitment to anchoring our village, we are also commencing development of one of two Heritage buildings,” Consolidated Properties Executive Chairman Don O’Rorke said

“The $5 million building will be completed mid-2019 and will be used as an experience centre incorporating a sales and display suite ready for our sales launch on 3 August at which our first 91 apartments and 10 townhomes will be formally released,” he said.

Once completed, the $850 million Yeerongpilly Green development is set be home to about 3,000 residents providing commercial and retail spaces, boutique hotel, parkland, and open spaces; providing 1,000 full-time long-term jobs.

“The Palaszczuk Government has invested $30 million into the creation of parks, plazas and infrastructure at Yeerongpilly Green, which will benefit residents, Brisbane locals and visitors, and we are extremely proud to have backed this economy-boosting project and the jobs it is generating for Queenslanders.”

“It’s fantastic to see this project evolve and the Palaszczuk Government has ensured the public areas are of an extremely high quality,” Member for Miller Mark Bailey said.

“The local community is excited by the notion that once this great new retail precinct is open, they will be able to enjoy the ease of shopping for groceries or grabbing something to eat or drink at their doorstep,” he said.

Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said that the State Government contribution is important in realising a community where the architecture is inspired by the landscape.

“The pedestrian walkway provides a perfect link from the train station through the site, creating a direct route to the Queensland Tennis Centre, Ken Fletcher Park and Tennyson Reach,” he said.

“This enhanced connectivity between Pat Rafter Arena and the railway station is going to make getting to and from the Brisbane International so much easier.

“Around 90,000 people attend this great tournament over its seven days, so this infrastructure is really vital to managing the masses and growing the event further.”

Tennis Queensland CEO Mark Handley applauded the opening of the Yeerongpilly Green and the pedestrian spine, which will redefine the journey of tennis fans as they get off the train.

“Whether people are attending the Brisbane International, or just visiting the Queensland Tennis Centre throughout the year, their walk towards the iconic Pat Rafter Arena will now be so much more, with restaurants and social spaces enhancing the experience,” Mr Handley said.

“The beautification of the Yeerongpilly precinct makes it an even more attractive pocket of Brisbane for residents, families, and everyone using the tennis centre.”

Brisbane’s Next Lifestyle Village

Yeerongpilly Green promises to be the city’s next lifestyle village. Perfectly positioned near Tennyson, Graceville, Chelmer and Sherwood, the urban village is within reach of the best attractions and facilities in the city.

The community will be surrounded by various parks specialty retail establishments to create a laidback village atmosphere. Once completed, Yeerongpilly Green will have 3,000 new homes and a varied line-up of commercial, including a boutique hotel.

At the centre of the development is the 2.4 hectares of parkland and open space. The pedestrian and cycle network provides an interesting link between the new precinct to the Yeerongpilly Station to the tennis centre.

“People now have a fantastic space to enjoy, on their way to the tennis centre or experiencing the restaurants, parks, playgrounds, and future apartments and offices of Yeerongpilly Green,” Member for Miller Mark Bailey stressed.
