<p><strong>In Graceville, Botellón sits on a leafy stretch of Honour Avenue where Valentine’s Day can be kept pleasantly low-key. It’s the sort of place that rewards lingering — shared plates, passing forks, and conversation that outlasts the first round.</strong></p>

<hr><p class="related"><strong><em>Read: <a href="https://bayviewnews.com.au/bayview-wharf-rebuild-plan-moves-closer-after-feedback-window-closes/">BBC Moves Forward With Sporting Facilities At Its Cliveden Avenue Property In Oxley</a></em></strong></p><hr>

<p>The venue sits within the Central Buildings, a row of shops designed and built around 1924 by builder and designer Walter Taylor. It’s the sort of place that anchors a neighbourhood. It’s recognisable, well-worn, and still doing what it was made for: bringing people in off the footpath.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Botellón leans into that intimacy rather than fighting it, with a cosy indoor dining room and alfresco seating that suits long, light-strung evenings. The restaurant itself is relatively young by Graceville standards, opening in 2019 and quickly becoming a western-suburbs favourite for Spanish-inspired dining.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1000" height="1000" src="https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Botellon-outside.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22364" srcset="https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Botellon-outside.jpg 1000w, https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Botellon-outside-300x300.jpg 300w, https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Botellon-outside-150x150.jpg 150w, https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Botellon-outside-768x768.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo Credit: <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1312237900329360&amp;set=pb.100046294879927.-2207520000&amp;type=3">Botellon/Facebook</a></figcaption></figure></div>

<p>That mix — a new restaurant inside an old building — gives it a particular character. The food feels celebratory, but the room still feels like the neighbourhood.</p>

<p>This Valentine’s Day (Saturday, 14 February), Botellón is keeping things straightforward: lunch runs à la carte, while the evening shifts into a set menu ($95 per person). It’s an approach that suits the day’s many versions. Some people want a date-night ritual; others want a catch-up with friends; plenty will come as families, because a shared meal is one of the easiest ways to keep everyone talking.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Botellon-Valentines-1-1-768x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22366" srcset="https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Botellon-Valentines-1-1-768x1023.jpg 768w, https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Botellon-Valentines-1-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Botellon-Valentines-1-1-1153x1536.jpg 1153w, https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Botellon-Valentines-1-1-1200x1599.jpg 1200w, https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Botellon-Valentines-1-1.jpg 1440w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 85vw, 768px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo Credit: <a href="https://www.facebook.com/botellonbar/photos">Botellon/Facebook</a></figcaption></figure></div>

<p>At lunch, the restaurant’s à la carte format lends itself naturally to seasonal, shareable dishes. In its Valentine’s promotion, the venue features starters such as burrata with smoky escalivada and baked saganaki finished with salsa agridulce and oregano, alongside paella as the centrepiece.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The mariscos paella is described in the same promotion as a generous mix of prawns, scallops, octopus and chorizo, brought together with saffron aioli — the kind of dish that does what good food should do on a day like Valentine’s: it gives the table something to gather around.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="871" height="1024" src="https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/mariscos-paella-871x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22361" srcset="https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/mariscos-paella-871x1024.jpg 871w, https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/mariscos-paella-255x300.jpg 255w, https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/mariscos-paella-768x903.jpg 768w, https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/mariscos-paella.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo Credit: <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=1120664649486687&amp;set=pcb.1120664692820016">Botellon/Facebook</a></figcaption></figure>

<p>Dinner is more structured. It begins with a choice of oysters with mignonette or manchego cheese with caperberries and quince, followed by bread — sourdough with garlic chive butter or a gluten-free house-made loaf — alongside whipped ricotta with chilli honey, walnut and oregano. From there, the menu moves into king prawn with brown butter, soy sauce, paprika oil, parsley, capers and guindillas, plus eggplant chips with lime honey.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="819" height="1024" src="https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/oysters-with-mignonette-819x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22362" srcset="https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/oysters-with-mignonette-819x1024.jpg 819w, https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/oysters-with-mignonette-240x300.jpg 240w, https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/oysters-with-mignonette-768x960.jpg 768w, https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/oysters-with-mignonette.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 819px) 85vw, 819px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo Credit: <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=1232131048340046&amp;set=a.608700130683144">Botellon/Facebook</a></figcaption></figure></div>

<p>For mains, diners choose between paella (chicken and chorizo, prawn and chorizo, or vegetarian) with chimichurri, or a 250 g striploin served with spicy XO sauce or chimichurri. Dessert offers two distinct finishes: chocolate cremeux, or churros with dulce de leche.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Botellon-Valentines-2-768x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22358" srcset="https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Botellon-Valentines-2-768x1023.jpg 768w, https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Botellon-Valentines-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Botellon-Valentines-2-1153x1536.jpg 1153w, https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Botellon-Valentines-2-1200x1599.jpg 1200w, https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Botellon-Valentines-2.jpg 1440w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 85vw, 768px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo Credit: <a href="https://www.facebook.com/botellonbar/photos">Botellon/Facebook</a></figcaption></figure></div>

<p>What makes the night feel like Botellón, though, isn’t just the sequence of courses. It’s the way the whole format encourages lingering. The venue’s Valentine’s promotion also mentions cava as the celebratory thread, from classic sparkling pours to a playful cava sangria with fruit and brandy. If you’re not marking an occasion with bubbles, you can keep it quieter: a glass of something Spanish and chilled, a long chat, and the kind of evening that doesn’t need a grand gesture to feel special.</p>

<p>In a suburb that prizes its local rituals — cafés you return to, walking routes you can do without thinking, shopfronts that don’t change much even when the businesses inside them do — Botellón has slipped into place with ease.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Valentine’s Day, it’s less about “the perfect night” and more about a very Graceville idea: good food in a familiar spot, shared with whoever you’re lucky enough to have on the other side of the table.</p>

<p><strong>The Walter Taylor Bridge, a crucial link between Chelmer and Indooroopilly, is set for a temporary closure this month, reigniting discussions about its future.&nbsp;</strong></p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<p class="has-text-align-center"><strong><em>Read: </em></strong><a href="https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/walter-taylor-bridge-closes-for-maintenance-chelmer-commuters-to-face-detours/"><strong><em>Walter Taylor Bridge Closes for Maintenance: Chelmer Commuters To Face Detours</em></strong></a></p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<p>As the structure prepares to shut down from September 13 to 30 for maintenance, stakeholders are divided on how to address the growing traffic demands in this bustling corridor.</p>

<p>Michael Kane, head of public policy at <a href="https://www.racq.com.au/">RACQ</a>, suggested that traffic modelling indicates a need for bridge duplication by 2041, if not sooner. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXcZzY6tllktlgmL-x6zfDexeiEGV3pW3s5-l7vSmI34GRpdXzcMHLS9uZqLG0pziIEaHmiChOXaJGmOmmKagWf5AEjyWj4g1sSJs02Z44kGt7A-ZUk_3thwpSXFh1ONHx9osM3UR0cRmNFVS09pCg3hWUYfkC9lf4wSnWJRvg?key=PyE5SdlGMdRD-pM5dRIcnw" alt="Walter Taylor"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo credit: Peter Kaye/Google Maps</figcaption></figure></div>

<p></p>

<p>Mr Kane acknowledged that such a project would be complex and costly for the council, and given its local nature and competing priorities, substantial state or federal funding seems unlikely. He advocates for more detailed modelling to refine traffic forecasts and potential upgrade timelines.</p>

<p>Former transport minister Mark Bailey argued for a more urgent approach. He contends that a replacement bridge is needed much sooner than 2041, describing the current structure as one of Brisbane&#8217;s worst bottlenecks due to its single lane connecting the inner city to the Centenary suburbs.</p>

<p>Despite these calls for action, plans for duplication have stalled. Cr Andrew Wines, the council&#8217;s civic cabinet chair for infrastructure, attributes this to a lack of support from state and federal governments. In response, Transport Minister Bart Mellish stated that the responsibility for the bridge&#8217;s future lies with the local government, as it is a council asset.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXf71bNOinHNENBMUvGn-tCPhpaVPNKV6LrFg3JfuYFuCp9KMbyYOJ8Q89OFmvdSNWIbZNe3DNpTNeXRSffAu0bwGEInj6WufQWi8_fRCKensM-cx9vSIUQIxjX360aATGOQe0u5cSn6Sg3OSxisLp84UGPgN_aLiBZC9E2_mw?key=PyE5SdlGMdRD-pM5dRIcnw" alt="Walter Taylor"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo credit: Andrew Percy/Google Maps</figcaption></figure></div>

<p></p>

<p>Alternative solutions are also being proposed. Greens MP Michael Berkman suggests reopening the Tennyson rail line as a potential alternative to a new river crossing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Cr Nicole Johnston advocates for a more comprehensive approach, proposing an extension of the City Cat ferry service further upriver to provide an alternative transport option for university students and others.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<p class="has-text-align-center"><strong><em>Read: </em></strong><a href="https://overthewaltertaylorbridge.com.au/bridge-strike-causes-major-delays-for-corinda-rail-and-bus-commuters/"><strong><em>Bridge Strike Causes Major Delays for Corinda Rail and Bus Commuters</em></strong></a></p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<p>With stakeholders divided and funding uncertain, the future of this vital river crossing remains unclear. As the city evolves, finding a solution that satisfies all parties while meeting the area&#8217;s long-term needs will be crucial to keeping Brisbane moving forward.</p>
