The Change.org petition was created on August 17 and calls for specific changes to the school’s dress requirements. As of September 29, it had attracted hundreds of verified signatures.

The petition authors argued that some of the rules are unnecessarily restrictive and leave students with limited options for personal expression. Their requested changes cover several aspects of the policy, including hair, jewellery, piercings, and how parts of the uniform can be worn.

Among the requested changes are permission for different earring styles, including multiple earrings, larger studs and sleepers. The petition also calls for coloured hair and small facial piercings that could be replaced with clear retainers. Other requests include allowing necklaces and bracelets of reasonable length, as well as permitting boys to wear their shirts untucked.

The petition also raises concerns about clothing restrictions during school activities, giving examples such as coloured tutus for sporting events and pyjamas for pyjama day. The petition argues that some restrictions extend beyond what is needed for safety and says the policy limits students’ cultural, religious, sexual, aesthetic and personal expression.

The petition compares Corinda’s policy with approaches at other local schools, including Centenary State High School, Indooroopilly State High School and Brigidine College. Those comparisons are presented by the petition as examples of different approaches to student dress.

The campaign is seeking changes to particular parts of the dress code, rather than calling for the school uniform itself to be abolished.

What the school’s policy says

Corinda State High School’s published policy states that students are expected to wear the complete school uniform at all times and to be clean and well groomed. The school says its dress code reflects the standards embraced by the school and is intended to promote personal pride and a positive identity within the community.

The policy also states that the formal day uniform, including leather shoes and a backpack, must be worn at school and on the way to and from school. Students are required to wear the full day uniform on excursions and at formal events unless otherwise indicated.

The school’s rules provide for alternative arrangements where a student cannot meet the dress code because of hardship or extreme conditions. A note from home outlining the reason is required, with the school saying it will endeavour to make alternative arrangements.

The policy states that variations to the uniform will not be accepted and that failure to follow the requirements can result in consequences under the school’s Code of Conduct. The school’s rules page also directs students who are not in the correct uniform to present a note from a parent or guardian to their relevant Dean of Students.

The policy says the principal is responsible for consulting students, staff, parents and the Parents and Citizens’ Association when developing or reviewing the school’s dress code, as well as approving the dress code and any amendments.
